Since 2015, many refugees were forced to flee towards Europe. Greece was often the first country of arrival. In the further course of 2016, the so-called "Balkan route" between Greece and Western Europe was "closed" by various states i.e the people were prevented from continuing their journey. Many thousands of refugees were consequently left stranded on their escape routes. At the borders between Greece and neighboring states, informal settlements and camps were formed, in which people found makeshift shelter.
Since the conditions there were dramatic, many - especially small - organizations made the decision to become active in the informal refugee camps. MTS became part of a network of organizations from Hamburg and Munich. Temporary schools and kindergartens were set up together in the camps so that children and young people could not only continue their pursuit of an education, but also receive mental and psychological support.
